Pahalgam's side valleys, Aru, Betaab and Chandanwari (often sold together as the "ABC" tour), are the reason to spend at least one full day in Pahalgam.
- Private cabs can't enter; use Pahalgam's union taxis.
- Betaab is the classic view, Aru is quieter, Chandanwari has lingering snow.
- Allow most of a day for all three.
- Choose one or two if you're short on time or budget.
The union taxi rule
Outside private cabs aren't allowed up these roads. You hire a local union taxi from the stand in Pahalgam, at fixed union rates, either for one valley or a combined tour. Fares are paid locally unless included in your package.

Betaab Valley
About 15 km from Pahalgam: a green, flat meadow with a clear stream and forested slopes, named after a Bollywood film shot here. Easy walking and the classic view. Best for families and first-timers.

Aru Valley
About 12 km up a different road: a village and meadows at the start of several treks, including the route towards Tarsar and Marsar lakes. Quieter, with pony rides into the meadows.

Chandanwari
Further up the Betaab road, about 16 km from Pahalgam. It's the starting point of the Amarnath Yatra's Pahalgam route, and snow often lingers here well into summer, so it's popular for snow play.

Which to choose?
- One valley: Betaab.
- Two: Betaab and Chandanwari (same road).
- Quiet and walking: Aru.
Timing and tips
- Start by 9 am to beat queues at the taxi stand.
- Carry a warm layer; Chandanwari is cold.
- During the Amarnath Yatra (usually July–August), Chandanwari access may be restricted; check the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board dates.
