Kashmir Itinerary: 3 to 8 Day Plans That Actually Work

A good Kashmir itinerary is less about how many places you tick off and more about how many nights you spend packing. The valley's four headline destinations, Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg, sit in different directions from Srinagar, so the order you visit them in and where you sleep decide whether your trip in Kashmir feels relaxed or rushed. Below are the plans we use most often, with honest drive times.

Key takeaways
  • Base yourself in Srinagar and stay overnight only where it saves a long return drive (usually Pahalgam).
  • Five or six nights is the sweet spot for Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg.
  • Start in Jammu only if you want Vaishno Devi or arrive by train; it adds one to two days.
  • Leave a buffer: weather, road closures and Gondola queues all eat time.

How to build your Kashmir trip itinerary

Before choosing a plan, settle three things:

Temple complex of the Vaishno Devi Bhawan on a green mountainside above Katra
  1. Where you arrive. Most people fly into Srinagar. If you're coming by train, or want darshan at Mata Vaishno Devi, a Jammu Kashmir itinerary starting at Jammu or Katra makes more sense.
  2. How many nights you have. Three nights covers the essentials; six lets you slow down; eight adds an offbeat valley.
  3. The season. Sonamarg and the road beyond it can close in heavy snow, while Gulmarg is at its best for snow from December to March.

Here are typical distances from Srinagar (approximate; check the road before you set out):

3-day Kashmir itinerary (2 nights)

Short, but it works if you keep Srinagar as your only base.

Family walking through a Mughal garden in Srinagar
  • Day 1: Arrive in Srinagar. Afternoon Shikara ride on Dal Lake and an evening at the Mughal gardens (Nishat or Shalimar). Overnight in a hotel or houseboat.
  • Day 2: Day trip to Gulmarg (about 1.5โ€“2 hours each way). Gondola Phase 1, meadow walk, back to Srinagar for dinner.
  • Day 3: Shankaracharya Temple or the old city in the morning, then departure.

5-day Kashmir tour itinerary (4 nights)

This is the shortest plan we'd call comfortable for a first visit.

Lidder River winding through a meadow at sunset
  • Day 1: Arrive in Srinagar, Shikara ride, overnight on a houseboat.
  • Day 2: Srinagar to Gulmarg. Gondola and meadows. Overnight in Gulmarg or back in Srinagar.
  • Day 3: Drive to Pahalgam (about 4 hours from Gulmarg). Evening by the Lidder River. Overnight in Pahalgam.
  • Day 4: Betaab and Aru valleys by local union taxi, or Baisaran by pony. Return to Srinagar in the evening.
  • Day 5: Mughal gardens and departure.

Our Kashmir 4 nights 5 days package follows almost exactly this route.

Six days is the sweet spot. It adds Sonamarg without making any day too long.

Pony riders heading towards Thajiwas Glacier, Sonamarg
  • Day 1: Arrive in Srinagar, Shikara ride, overnight on a houseboat.
  • Day 2: Day trip to Sonamarg (about 2.5โ€“3 hours each way). Thajiwas Glacier on foot or by pony. Back to Srinagar.
  • Day 3: Srinagar to Gulmarg. Gondola Phase 1, and Phase 2 if the weather allows. Overnight in Gulmarg.
  • Day 4: Gulmarg to Pahalgam via Srinagar. Evening walk by the river.
  • Day 5: Pahalgam's valleys by union taxi, or a slower day by the river with the family.
  • Day 6: Drive back to Srinagar and depart.

See it as a ready trip in our Kashmir tour package 5 nights 6 days.

8-day Jammu and Kashmir itinerary (from Jammu)

Choose this if you're arriving by train or want to visit Vaishno Devi.

  • Day 1: Arrive in Jammu or Katra. Overnight in Katra.
  • Day 2: Vaishno Devi darshan (on foot, by pony, or by helicopter where available). Overnight in Katra.
  • Day 3: Drive to Srinagar (about 7โ€“9 hours from Jammu, via the Banihal tunnels). Overnight in Srinagar.
  • Days 4โ€“7: Follow days 2โ€“5 of the 6-day plan above.
  • Day 8: Drive back to Jammu, or fly out of Srinagar.

Our Kashmir with Vaishno Devi package and the other Jammu Kashmir tour packages are built on this plan. Check yatra rules on the Shrine Board website before you go.

Mistakes we see in DIY itineraries

  • Sleeping in a new place every night. You lose two hours a day checking in and out. Use Srinagar as a base.
  • Gulmarg and Pahalgam on the same day. They're four hours apart; doing both means seeing neither.
  • No buffer day. Snow, landslides or a Gondola closure can cost you half a day. Keep the last afternoon free.
  • Forgetting union taxis. In Pahalgam, Sonamarg and parts of Gulmarg, local union taxis are compulsory for some sights. Budget for them (see our Kashmir trip cost guide).

Which itinerary should you pick?

If it's your first trip in Kashmir and you have a week, take the 6-day plan. Short on time? The 3-day plan with Gulmarg is better than squeezing in Pahalgam too. Want something quieter? Add two nights in Gurez Valley; see our Gurez Valley tour package.

Every plan here can be booked as a private trip with hotels, breakfast and dinner, and a cab. Browse all Kashmir tour packages, or send us your dates and we'll adapt one of these Kashmir itineraries for you.
