Sonamarg, the "meadow of gold", is the last big valley before the road climbs over Zojila into Ladakh. Sightseeing in Sonmarg (as many people spell it) centres on glaciers, river and meadows.
- Thajiwas Glacier is reachable on foot or by pony from the main meadow.
- Zero Point needs a local taxi and an open Zojila pass.
- Rafting on the Sindh runs in the warmer months.
- Sonamarg is usually visited as a long day trip from Srinagar.
Thajiwas Glacier
The main attraction: a glacier at the head of a side valley, about 3 km from the main meadow. Walk (an hour or so each way at an easy pace) or ride a pony; agree rates at the pony stand first. In summer you'll find snow at the glacier's foot.

Zero Point
Beyond Zojila, on the road towards Drass, Zero Point is known for snow even in summer. You'll need a local taxi from Sonamarg, and it's only possible when the pass is open. Expect a rough road and cold wind.

The Sindh River

- Rafting: short stretches on easy-to-moderate rapids, usually in the warmer months.
- Trout fishing: needs a permit from the fisheries department.
- Riverside walks: pleasant even if you do nothing else.
Baltal
The base for the Amarnath Yatra's Baltal route. During the yatra (usually July–August), traffic and security increase around Sonamarg; check dates with the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board.

Practical tips
- Leave Srinagar by 8 am; it's 2.5–3 hours each way.
- Carry a warm layer and sunscreen.
- The road beyond Sonamarg can close at short notice in winter.
