If you've seen Dal Lake, Gulmarg and Pahalgam, or simply want fewer crowds, Kashmir has plenty of quieter corners. These offbeat places in Kashmir are all reachable by road, and most are a day trip or one night away from Srinagar.
- Many offbeat valleys are only a few hours from Srinagar.
- Facilities are basic; plan meals and fuel.
- Some border areas need ID checks or permission.
- Most are best between May and October.
1. Gurez Valley
Log-wood villages, the Kishanganga river and Habba Khatoon peak. Remote and unforgettable. See our Gurez Valley guide.

2. Doodhpathri
A wide, gentle meadow with a fast stream, 1.5 hours from Srinagar. See our Doodhpathri guide.

3. Yusmarg
Pine forest, pony trails and little Nilnag lake. See our Yusmarg guide.

4. Lolab Valley
An orchard-filled valley in Kupwara district in the north, known for its villages and forests. Long drive; best as an overnight trip.

5. Aharbal
A strong waterfall on the Vishaw river in south Kashmir, about 2.5 hours from Srinagar. Take care near the edges.
6. Kokernag
Spring-fed gardens and a trout farm, often combined with Verinag and Achabal on a south Kashmir day.
7. Verinag
An octagonal Mughal-era tank around a deep spring, often described as the source of the Jhelum.
8. Tulail
The upper reaches of the Gurez region, very remote and only accessible in summer, where permitted.
Before you go
- Check road access and any permission requirements; border areas have checkpoints.
- Carry ID, cash, food and water.
- Tell your hotel or driver your plans.
Our offbeat Kashmir tour package and Kashmir meadows tour include several of these. Official updates: J&K Department of Tourism.
