How to Choose Kashmir Tour Operators: A 10-Point Checklist

There are hundreds of Kashmir tour operators, from family-run local agencies to national portals. Many are excellent; some are not. When people ask us for the best tour operators in Kashmir, our honest answer is: use this checklist, and don't take anyone's word for it, including ours.

Key takeaways
  • Ask for registration details and check them with the J&K Department of Tourism.
  • Insist on hotel names and a written list of inclusions and exclusions.
  • Never pay the full amount in advance to an unknown agency.
  • Ask who you call during the trip, and test that number before you book.

Whether you start by searching for tour operators in Srinagar Kashmir, the best travel agencies in Jammu and Kashmir, or simply "travels Kashmir", the same checks apply.

The checklist

Riverside hotel in Pahalgam
  1. Registration. Jammu and Kashmir tour operators can register with the J&K Department of Tourism. Ask for the registration details and verify them on the official tourism site or by calling the department.
  2. A physical office. An address you can find on a map, ideally in Kashmir.
  3. Hotel names. "Deluxe hotel in Pahalgam" isn't enough. Get names, then look them up.
  4. Inclusions in writing. Meals, vehicle type, Shikara ride, toll and parking, union taxis.
  5. Exclusions in writing. Gondola, ponies, entry fees, heaters, GST.
  6. Payment terms. A reasonable advance, the balance later, and a receipt for every payment.
  7. Cancellation policy. Written, with dates and amounts.
  8. On-trip support. A named person and a number that answers. Call it before you book.
  9. Reviews you can verify. Google reviews with replies are more useful than testimonials on a website.
  10. A sensible itinerary. Beware plans that cover Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg in one day.

Red flags

Car on a mountain road beside a river
  • Prices far below everyone else's, with vague hotels
  • Pressure to pay in full immediately, or to an individual's account
  • No written confirmation
  • An itinerary that ignores drive times

Local operator or national portal?

Local operators can solve problems the same day and know road and weather conditions; portals offer convenience and familiar brands. Read what a local Srinagar tour and travels company does and the questions to ask before booking. Learn more about Travel Wiki.
