Ask five agencies for a Kashmir package price and you'll get five different numbers for what looks like the same trip. Almost all of the difference comes from two things: the hotel category and what's included. Here's how tour packages of Kashmir with prices compare.

- 3★ Premium: superior 3-star hotels in better locations; deluxe houseboat.
- 4★ Deluxe: 4-star hotels with views and restaurants; Innova.
- 5★ Luxury: 5-star resorts and a heritage houseboat; Innova Crysta or SUV.

Why two quotes differ
- Hotel names. "Deluxe" means very different things to different agencies. Ask for hotel names.
- Meals. Breakfast and dinner (MAP) versus breakfast only.
- Vehicle. A shared or point-to-point taxi versus a private cab for the whole trip.
- Extras. Is the Shikara ride included? Pahalgam union taxis?
- Season. June, the Diwali week, Christmas and New Year carry surcharges in most hotels.
Getting the best price
Travel in shoulder months, keep the same hotel for several nights, and choose 3★ Premium in Srinagar but 4★ in Gulmarg or Pahalgam if you only want to splurge in the mountains.
