A Jammu to Kashmir trip used to mean a long day on the national highway. Today, tunnels have shortened the road, and rail links into the valley have changed the options. Here's how to plan a Kashmir tour from Jammu.
- By road, Jammu to Srinagar is about 250 km and 7–9 hours.
- Trains to Srinagar, where running, are faster and avoid highway closures.
- Patnitop makes a good overnight break for families.
- Leave Jammu early; afternoon traffic near Banihal can be slow.
Option 1: by road
About 250 km and usually 7–9 hours from Jammu to Srinagar. The route passes Nagrota, Udhampur, the Chenani–Nashri tunnel (bypassing Patnitop), Ramban along the Chenab gorge and the Banihal tunnel into the valley at Qazigund.

- Pros: door-to-door, flexible stops, luggage is no problem.
- Cons: traffic, roadworks and occasional closures after rain or snow.
Option 2: by train
Where services to Srinagar are running, the train crosses some of the most dramatic rail engineering in India, including the Chenab bridge, and avoids the highway altogether. Seats can be limited in season; book on IRCTC as early as you can. We collect you at the station in Srinagar.

Stops worth making by road

- Patnitop: pine forests and meadows, ideal for an overnight break with children or elders.
- Kud and Batote: tea stalls and roadside snacks.
- Ramban: the Chenab viewpoints.
- Qazigund: your first look at the valley.
Sample plans
- Fastest: Jammu or Katra by train or road to Srinagar in one day, then the classic valley circuit.
- Comfortable: Jammu, a night in Patnitop, then Srinagar. See the Kashmir package with Patnitop.
- Pilgrimage first: Katra and Vaishno Devi, then Srinagar. See the Katra to Kashmir tour package.
