The quick answer to "how far is Srinagar to Gulmarg?" is about 50 km, or 1.5–2 hours by car. But the more useful question is how the three hill stations fit together. Gulmarg lies west of Srinagar, Sonamarg north-east and Pahalgam south-east. Going between them usually means passing back through or near Srinagar, which is why we base most trips there.
- Srinagar to Gulmarg is about 50 km (1.5–2 hours); Sonamarg about 80 km (2.5–3 hours); Pahalgam about 95 km (2.5–3 hours).
- Gulmarg, Sonamarg and Pahalgam are in three different directions, so going between them is slower than going from Srinagar.
- Day trips work for Gulmarg and Sonamarg; Pahalgam is better with an overnight stay.
- Snow, Amarnath Yatra convoys and roadworks can add hours; start early.
Distance and drive time at a glance
These are typical figures for a private cab in good conditions. Allow more in winter or during the Amarnath Yatra in July and August.

| Gulmarg | Pahalgam | about 140 km | 4–4.5 hours |
| Gulmarg | Sonamarg | about 130 km | 4 hours |
| Pahalgam | Sonamarg | about 175 km | 5 hours |

Srinagar to Gulmarg (and Gulmarg to Srinagar)
About 50 km, 1.5–2 hours. The road runs through Magam and Tangmarg, then climbs through pine forest for the last 13 km. In winter, chains or a 4x4 may be needed beyond Tangmarg, and local taxi unions run snow vehicles. Gulmarg to Srinagar takes the same time, a little longer in evening traffic.

Day trip or overnight? A day trip works if you leave Srinagar by 8 am. Stay a night if you want Gondola Phase 2 at a quiet time, or in winter, when skiing lessons start early.
Srinagar to Sonamarg ("Srinagar Sonmarg")
About 80 km, 2.5–3 hours. The road follows the Sindh River through Kangan to Sonamarg. Many people spell it "Sonmarg"; it's the same place. From Sonamarg, Thajiwas Glacier is a walk or pony ride, and Zero Point is a further drive beyond Zojila when the pass is open.

Day trip or overnight? Usually a long day trip from Srinagar. Stay overnight only if you're heading on to Kargil or Ladakh.
Srinagar to Pahalgam (and Pahalgam to Srinagar)
About 95 km, 2.5–3 hours. The route passes saffron fields at Pampore, the Awantipora ruins and the cricket-bat workshops at Sangam before following the Lidder River up from Anantnag. It's one of the prettiest drives in the valley, so plan a stop or two. On the way back, the Pahalgam–Srinagar drive takes the same time, a little more in evening traffic.

Day trip or overnight? Overnight. Betaab Valley, Aru and Chandanwari need local union taxis and take most of a day; doing them on a return day trip is exhausting.
Between the hill stations
Gulmarg to Pahalgam
About 140 km, 4–4.5 hours, via the outskirts of Srinagar. This is the leg most itineraries use, because it saves a night in Srinagar.
Gulmarg to Sonamarg
About 130 km, around 4 hours. Rarely worth doing directly; visit Sonamarg as a day trip from Srinagar instead.
Pahalgam to Sonamarg
About 175 km, around 5 hours. Only sensible if you're heading on to Kargil or Ladakh.
A sensible order for all three
- Srinagar (arrive, Shikara, gardens)
- Day trip to Sonamarg
- Gulmarg (overnight)
- Gulmarg to Pahalgam (two nights)
- Pahalgam to Srinagar, depart
That's the backbone of our Kashmir itinerary guide and the 5 nights 6 days Kashmir package.
Practical tips for the road
- Start early. Roads are clearer before 9 am, and you get the best light.
- Carry cash. Union taxis, pony rides and some tea stalls don't take cards.
- Check road status. The Srinagar–Sonamarg and Jammu–Srinagar highways can close for snow or landslides; ask your driver the night before. See the J&K Department of Tourism for official updates.
- Motion sickness. The last climb to Gulmarg and the Lidder road have bends; sit in front if you need to.
All our Srinagar tour packages include a private cab with a local driver for these routes, so you don't have to negotiate taxis at each stop.
