Pahalgam sits in the Lidder valley with forested slopes and meadows all around. The best time to visit Pahalgam depends on what you want: green meadows, rafting, snow or peace and quiet.
- April to June and September to October are ideal.
- July and August are busy with the Amarnath Yatra.
- Winter brings snow and fewer open side valleys.
- Rafting usually runs late spring to early autumn.
Spring: April to June
Snowmelt fills the Lidder, meadows turn green and the side valleys open up. It's the most popular time, especially in June. Rafting usually begins as the water allows.

Yatra season: July to August
The Amarnath Yatra passes through Pahalgam to Chandanwari, bringing convoys, security and crowds. Visiting is possible but plan around yatra dates from the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board, and expect restrictions at Chandanwari.

Autumn: September to October
Our favourite: clear skies, quieter roads and the first autumn colours. Perfect for Betaab and Aru Valley walks.

Winter: November to March
Snow and silence. Some side valleys and roads close; hotels are quieter and cheaper. Beautiful for a slow snowy stay, less so for sightseeing.

Quick picks
- Families: May, June or September.
- Couples wanting quiet: late September to October.
- Snow lovers: January, with a Gulmarg night too.
