A houseboat night is one of Kashmir's signature experiences: carved walnut-wood ceilings, Persian-style carpets, a deck over the water and a Shikara as your front door.
- One night is enough for most travellers; two if you love it.
- Dal is lively; Nigeen is calmer.
- Ask about heating in winter and hot water.
- Houseboats are reached by Shikara; pack a small overnight bag.
Dal Lake or Nigeen Lake?

- Dal Lake: close to the Boulevard, lively, with Shikara traffic and views of the city lights.
- Nigeen Lake: quieter and greener, a little further from the centre. Good for couples and longer stays.
Categories
Houseboats are graded into categories, from standard to deluxe and heritage or luxury. Heritage boats have the finest woodwork and more attentive service. Ask for photos of the actual boat and room.

What's usually included

- A bedroom with attached bathroom
- Breakfast and dinner on a MAP plan
- Shikara transfers to and from the shore
Comfort tips

- Winter: ask about heating (bukhari, electric blankets or heaters) and hot water.
- Luggage: you board by Shikara; keep a small overnight bag handy.
- Mosquitoes in summer: ask for repellent or nets.
- Noise: request a boat away from the busiest ghats if you're a light sleeper.
How many nights?
One night suits most people; it's a memorable experience rather than a base. Spend your other Srinagar nights in a hotel close to the gardens.
Where it fits
Most of our Srinagar tour packages include a houseboat night; the Dal Lake houseboat package builds a trip around it. Official houseboat information is available from the J&K Department of Tourism.
