Kashmir's snow-fed rivers make for cold, lively rafting. The two most popular stretches are on the Lidder near Pahalgam and the Sindh near Sonamarg.
- Rafting usually runs from late spring to early autumn.
- Most stretches are easy to moderate and suit first-timers.
- Always wear the life jacket and helmet provided.
- Water levels change daily; follow the guide's call.
Lidder River, Pahalgam
Rafting usually starts a few kilometres downstream of Pahalgam, with rapids that are mostly easy to moderate. It's the most popular option and works well as a half-day activity on a Pahalgam rest day.

Sindh River, Sonamarg
Shorter runs near Sonamarg, often combined with a visit to Thajiwas Glacier. The water is icy; you will get wet.

Season and conditions
Rafting typically runs from late spring to early autumn. Early in the season, snowmelt makes the water higher and faster; later it calms down. Operators decide each day based on water levels.

Safety
- Use only registered operators with trained guides.
- Wear the life jacket and helmet at all times.
- Listen to the safety briefing and follow the guide's commands.
- Ask about minimum age; children may not be allowed on higher water.
- Leave valuables with your driver.
What to wear
Quick-dry clothes, a change of clothes for afterwards and sandals with straps.
