Sonamarg and Pahalgam are both on the route to the Amarnath cave, Sonamarg via Baltal and Pahalgam via Chandanwari, but there's no road between them over the mountains. A Sonmarg to Pahalgam drive goes back through Srinagar.
- Sonamarg to Pahalgam is about 175 km, around 5 hours, via Srinagar.
- Most trips visit Sonamarg as a day trip from Srinagar instead.
- The direct transfer only makes sense if you're already sleeping in Sonamarg.
- Avoid the Amarnath Yatra peak days if you can; both roads get busy.
The numbers
About 175 km and around five hours, more during the yatra or in Srinagar traffic. The route: Sonamarg, Kangan, Ganderbal, the Srinagar bypass, then the highway to Anantnag and up the Lidder valley.

When it makes sense

- You're sleeping in Sonamarg and moving on to Pahalgam the next day.
- You're on a long trip with a night in each hill station, like our Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg tour.
When it doesn't
On a short trip it's usually better to do Sonamarg as a day trip from Srinagar, then drive to Pahalgam the next morning fresh. Your total time in the car is similar, but you skip a hotel change.

Tips for the drive
- Leave by 8 am to clear Ganderbal before traffic builds.
- Have lunch in Srinagar or at Awantipora.
- In July and August, check yatra convoy timings; the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board publishes yatra dates.
