Kashmir's alpine lakes and meadows make for some of the most beautiful trekking in the Himalaya. Here's a quick guide from easy walks to classic multi-day routes.
- The main trekking season is roughly July to September.
- Multi-day treks need a registered operator and fitness preparation.
- Easy day hikes exist in Pahalgam, Sonamarg and Gulmarg.
- Carry ID and follow local registration rules.
Multi-day treks
- Kashmir Great Lakes: about a week, typically from near Sonamarg to Naranag, passing a string of high alpine lakes and passes. Moderate to challenging.
- Tarsar Marsar: usually starting from Aru near Pahalgam, with two striking lakes and meadow camps. Moderate.
- Gangabal (Harmukh): shorter, from Naranag, to lakes below Mount Harmukh. Moderate, with a steep first day.
These need fitness, proper gear and a registered trekking operator with guides, cooks and camping.

Easy day hikes

- Aru to the meadows above the village (Pahalgam)
- Thajiwas Glacier (Sonamarg)
- Gulmarg's outer circle and Alpather approaches (with a guide)
- Doodhpathri's meadows
Season
The main high-altitude season is roughly July to September, when snow has cleared from passes. Spring and autumn suit lower day hikes.

Safety

- Acclimatise and don't rush ascent.
- Carry ID; register as required locally.
- Check weather daily; mountain storms build in the afternoon.
- Carry water purification and layers.
Combine with a tour
Spend a few days in the valley first: the Kashmir adventure tour package is a good warm-up. Trek information is published by the J&K Department of Tourism.
